Gameplay

The Camp

Inside The Camp.
Upon starting either a single player or co-op game of Rampage Knights, players will find themselves in The Camp. This is the hub of the game, where players start and where they respawn when they lose all their lives (unless on the casual difficulty mode). Here, players can change various settings such as their appearance, class and difficulty settings.

The Camp also contains several barrels that can be destroyed. These may contain useful items such as food or gold. For more information, view the Loot and Gear section.

Training Ground

The Training Grounds.
Rampage Knights 1 8
To the left of the camp is a graveyard, known as the Training Grounds. This contains a book stand that can be interacted with to learn about combat. The area also contains Skeletons. These wear boxing gloves and do not wield a weapon, and will not attack players. This makes them good for practicing the game's Controls and attacks. It is highly recommended that new players visit the Training Ground to learn the basics of the game.

Levels

Other than The Camp, levels in Rampage Knights are composed of a series of randomly generated rooms. These rooms are in a linear order, meaning that for the most part players are always moving further towards the end of the level. Special side rooms with treasure - or traps - are interspersed throughout, however. In some rooms, players can simply run through them without having to kill all the enemies. In others, especially in later levels, all enemies in a room must be killed before players can move on. Clearing rooms may produce items such as coins to appear on the ground.

Generally, each location has a different selection of enemies, items, traps and features, although some are shared between locations.

It is not possible to go back to a location once it has been completed unless players start over. However, it is possible to go back to rooms within a location that have already been visited. This can be useful, for example allowing players to go back and collect a potion once they have used the one they are carrying.

Rampage Knights can be divided up into 10 Locations:

Movement

Players can move by using the arrow keys on keyboard, or left stick on Xbox 360 controller. Players can jump using the space bar on keyboard, or A button on Xbox 360 controller. Players playing as the Assassin class, or using certain items, can jump twice to double jump. Holding Shift on keyboard, or Right Button on Xbox 360 controller and a direction allows players to roll and evade.

Combat

Combat in Rampage Knights is largely melee based. Players can perform a basic attack by pressing the D key on keyboards, or X key on an Xbox 360 controller. Holding and then releasing the attack key will perform a more powerful grand swing. Jumping then pressing the attack key performs a jumping attack. Attacking whilst in close proximity to an enemy kicks them, throwing them back a short distance and knocking them to the ground. Performs multiple attacks simultaneously allows for combos, which also has a chance of knocking enemies to the ground. Combos increase the player's damage, and their chance of performing a critical hit. Holding the attack button, then moving left or right, performs a dash attack. This makes the players character dash in that direction, hitting multiple enemies and potentially knocking them to the ground. Holding up whilst attacking causes the player to perform an uppercut attack every other swing. This knocks the enemy into the air. The player will then attack the enemy in the air, slamming them into the ground.

When an enemy is knocked to the ground, players can stomp on them by standing over the enemy and pressing the attack key. This causes a significant amount of damage. Players can also pick up a fallen enemy by pressing A on the keyboard, or B on an Xbox 360 controller, whilst standing next to them. Players can then throw them, dealing damage. Enemies can be thrown into other enemies, dealing damage to them also.

Some enemies, such as the Bat and Big Orc, cannot be knocked to the ground. Some enemies wield a shield. They first need to be disarmed using a Jump Attack or Dash Attack before they can be damaged.

Basic Combat Tips

  • Make use of dash attacks to damage large numbers of enemies simultaneously, and to break shields
  • Most enemies will swing their weapon back when they are about to attack, or a lightning symbol will appear above their heads. Pay attention to this and either attack them first to interrupt the attack, or evade out of the way, to avoid taking damage
  • Stomping on fallen enemies is an effective tactic. This causes large amounts of damage, and prevents them from getting back up to attack

Health

Health is displayed in the top left of the screen.
Of course, players can also take damage from enemies, in addition to dealing it. The player's current health is displayed in the top left of the screen. When this reaches zero, the player dies. Players start the game with two lives. Once all lives are used up, players will respawn at the camp, ending their run. The exception to this is on the casual difficulty setting, where players will respawn at the start of the location.

Players can heal health by collecting food and health potions (more information below).

Loot and Gear

The loot and equipment interface.
There are 6 basic categories of loot and gear in Rampage Knights:
  • Weapon: The players main weapon. Used for melee attacks as described above. Main article:Weapons
  • Spell and Offhand: Players can collect spells, which can be used to attack enemies. Accessed by pressing '1' on a keyboard. Main article:Spells and Offhand
  • Throwing Weapon: Players can also collect throwing weapons, such as Throwing Axes. Accessed by pressing '2' on a keyboard. Main article:Throwing Weapons
  • Potion:Potions can be used to restore health. Accessed by pressing '4' on a keyboard. Main article:Potions
  • Scrolls:Scrolls are single use items that grant a variety of special effects. Main article: Scrolls
  • Modifiers: Items can be collected that give passive effects. These can be seen by pressing Tab. Main article:Modifiers

They can also be accessed using the direction pad on an Xbox 360 controller.

Gold is displayed in the top left of the screen.
In addition to these items, players can also collect gold, which can be used to buy items from stores, and food which heals health.

Finding Loot and Gear

Loot and gear can be found randomly in the environment, by destroying items such as crates and barrels, from killing enemies and inside chests.

Chests
A chest.
Chests are objects that can be found randomly in Rampage Knights levels. These chests can contain a variety of items, including treasure, gold, potions, food and weapons. Chests can be opened by Lockpicking them. To do this, players can walk up to a chest and press A when using a keyboard or B when using an Xbox 360 controller. ocks are composed of three components - gold pins, grey pins and wood. In the lockpicking screen, the lockpick moves over these components and players must press the attack button ('A' on keyboard, or 'X' on an Xbox 360 controller), moving the lockpick down and touching the component. Touching and pressing down all the gold pins moves the player to the next screen. Completing all two or three screens opens the chest.

There are several types of chest in Rampage Knights. In order of value, these are:

Higher tier chests are likely to contain better loot.
